Lex and the City: Bringing Small Town Charm to Big City Fashion

While Lexington is a decently sized city, it is by no means an urban jungle. No doubt, Lexington is a vibrant community with its own unique history and culture. There are many notable traditions like horse racing, bourbon distilleries and college basketball, but the culture of dress, too, is unique.

While there is a wide range of style throughout Lexington, it is hard to ignore the fashion at the University of Kentucky. Style at UK tends to reflect our southern roots. If you find yourself reaching for your Lilly Pulitzer dress or L.L. Bean boots most days, you are not alone. This fall, however, embrace clothing that celebrates Lexington’s metropolitan side.

Look to big city streets for fashion inspiration. Instead of reaching for that Lilly dress, invest in a chic slip dress with a simple t-shirt underneath. Leave your Bean boots behind for lace-up ghillie flats. Trade floral prints for warm, neutral tones, and allow the texture of the pieces to speak for itself. Skip the mall to explore locally owned stores, like Pop’s Resale, to find vintage classics.

With a change of wardrobe comes a change of habit. Forego your normal stomping ground to explore Lexington’s urban side. Skip a country festival for a concert at The Burl. Located in a newly renovated train depot, The Burl is a music venue that is a perfect mix of old and new, embodying both the urban and southern roots of Lexington.

This fall, don’t be afraid to try something new. Be bold with your wardrobe, and you’ll be sure to stand out.
