Oscars Red Carpet: Best Looks
The glitz, the glam, the activism! This awards season has proved, unsurprisingly, to be one not only of beautiful style, but also of a deeper cultural meaning. After Meryl Streep's controversial and "overrated" speech at the Golden Globes, celebrities at the SAG Awards, Grammys, and now the Oscars are taking advantage of their massive platforms to express their beliefs and urge social change.
The latest form of protest? Small blue ribbons with the letters, ACLU, printed on them, symbolizing solidarity with the American Civil Liberties Union. Lin Manuel-Miranda, Ruth Negga, Karlie Kloss, and Busy Philipps are just a few of the celebs wearing the activistic accessory. Emma Stone took a similar route with a subtle gold Planned Parenthood pin on her Givenchy Haute Couture gown.
Other trends on the carpet include old Hollywood glamor, as seen on Taraji P. Henson's classic black Alberta Ferretti gown, complete with a diamond necklace, and of course, lots of sparkle. Stars tended to stick with four colors on the red carpet: red, black, white and champagne. Ruth Negga wore a red long-sleeved gown by Valentino, and Viola Davis also opted for red in Armani Privé. Celebrities in black and white included Alicia Vikander in all black lace by Louis Vuitton and Hailee Steinfeld in a flowy white Ralph & Russo gown. Dakota Johnson chose a silk champagne look by Gucci, while Halle Berry arrived in black and gold Atelier Versace.
