The Golden Globes Black Out and Why Its Important

This past weekend, many of our favorite celebrities, actors/actresses in particular, gathered to host an awards ceremony to celebrate all of the films that were produced in 2017. Before the event, there was an agreement that those who support the #MeToo movement should wear black in support of it and in protest of the inequality between men and women. Some also wore a pin with the words "Time's Up" signifying that time is up for all the assaulters who still hold powerful positions. There was no set in stone dress code requirement but nearly everyone showed up in all black and spoke out on the injustices that have been called out these past few months. Many celebrities brought powerful women as their guests such as the creator of the Me Too campaign, Tarana Burke, who attended with Michelle Williams.

This black out was an important step in the right direction.

This protest made a statement on the way many famous women are treated at these types of events. They are always asked “who are you wearing?” whereas men put on a suit and no one questions their outfit choice, style, or influence. Then after these events, the internet is flooded with ratings of these women’s appearances and guesses for why they dressed the way they did. Yes, these women still did wear very extravagant dresses but the attention was drawn towards the bold color being worn which was a very visible form of protest on display. This then allowed people to stray away from the typical interview questions on outfits and opinions of nominees and focus on an issue that’s been ignored and set aside for years: sexual assault.

Overall the atmosphere was very uplifting and there was a strong feeling of support. This protest was in no way the solution to the issue but it was extremely significant and vital to see so many influential people of all genders, ethnicities, and sexualities to come together and speak out.

Here's a slideshow of some of the bold and fashionable looks that were worn.
