Winter Skin Care Tips
Winter: the coldest and most unforgiving season to your skin. Not only is the air extremely dry but there tends to be a few different factors in skin becoming very dry and breaking out in the winter months. Here are three tips and tricks to help with the inevitable struggle with your skin this season.
1 .Moisturize- Now this is the most obvious tip to softer skin however there are some things to be aware for. First of all look at the brands of the moisturizers you’re buying. Sometimes some of the scented more ‘fun’ lotions aren’t as good quality-wise; they may not moisturize well and with the extra additives put in there, they can cause breakouts if you’re applying the lotion to your face. Purchasing moisturizers from brands whose main purpose is to re-hydrate skin is key. Some great brands are Cetaphil, CeraVe, Aquaphor, and Vaseline.
Next its important to know the differences between types of moisturizers and where to apply them. Lotions and creams are different. Lotion has a higher water percentage and therefore is less greasy and less likely to clog pores. So, lotion is the best option to apply on your face to ensure healthier skin and be less likely to breakout. Cream has a higher oil percentage meaning its more moisturizing and to some may feel better when being applied. This can be applied to your arms and legs. Lastly, there’s petroleum jelly which has an extremely high oil percentage. This can be applied to your lips to avoid chapped lips.
2. Make Diet Changes- Our diets directly affect every part of our body because its our fuel so obviously it effects the condition of our skin. Especially with the weather being colder and people staying in more often, we are more likely to indulge in unhealthier food. To avoid breakouts, being aware of your diet and making changes is key. Its been proved that dairy and carbohydrates are linked to acne breakouts. Avoiding them to the best of your ability will not only help your skin but also your body in general. Some easy switches are using vegan milk such as almond milk instead of dairy milk and coconut oil or vegan butter in lieu of regular butter. Eating less processed food is also a great trick as well.
3. Take Vitamins- This goes along with the last tip but as stated previously, what goes into you body affects it! Taking daily vitamins and supplements can begin to change your skin for the better in about a month. Some great vitamins to take are vitamin A, B complex, and C. Many grocery and drug stores sell different bottles of pill or gummy vitamins that have more than one type of vitamin in them and have labels for what those supplements help with!
Hopefully these three tips help better your skin during these freezing months and remember that if you’re experiencing extreme cases of dry skin or acne to visit a dermatologist.
