The Universal Trend of Unisex Clothes

There has been a slow but steady uprising of clothing brands coming out with unisex lines. What this means is that the clothing they are releasing isn’t targeted to just one gender. The appearance of the clothing and the sizing is very inclusive so its more likely to fit more people and also be flattering on all. We’ve seen it in big couture brands’ lines such as Louis Vuitton or Gucci but now common brands are picking up this trend as well. Even H&M and Forever 21 have gotten their hands on this trend. There are many reasons why this is a great move in the fashion industry.

The first is that it starts to de-gender clothing in the sense that it makes people rethink why a certain article of clothing is coupled with a specific gender. There’s no real reason that only women can wear tighter fitting clothing because its deemed to be more ‘feminine’ and why men wear baggier and looser clothing. Taking it one step further there's no real reason why only women are allowed to wear dresses or skirts . Men shouldn’t be seen as less masculine for wearing certain styles of clothes. The scrutinizing of gendering clothes is definitely apparent for men. There are so many fashion 'rules' that men have to abide by. Colors have also become heavily gendered. If one wants to look more 'girly' then they wear different shades of pink. By making people aware of this, being able to experiment with fashion has become much more exciting, easier, and less stigmatized. Many new chic trends are coming out because people are so much more open to experimenting.

The next reason that unisex clothing is great is for the LGBTQ+ community. Those who identify as non-binary can find it difficult to find clothing that’s appropriate for how they identify. The same goes for transgender people. Its really important that we have non gendered clothing for these reasons and not just out of comfort but also safety to further preventing any type of discrimination to some extent. Unfortunately people can be judged by their clothing and experimenting with the unisex trend helps prevent that.

Overall, the unisex trend is a great trend that has really picked up. Its a fashion forward and chic style that allows you to experiment and push the boundaries of clothing.
