Gucci's '19 Collection and How They Keep Evolving
Gucci presented their spring/summer 2019 collection on the first day of Paris Fashion Week instead of Milan. When announced by creative director Alessandro Michele this was a huge deal. Like, massive! A luxurious brand switching cities for their spring/summer collection? Unheard of.
Showcased was jock straps, mickey mouse handbags, birds on shoulders, and Dolly Parton? Since entering Gucci, Michele has taken the sexy of Gucci and turned it into emotion. Instead of jet-setting looks, they are vintage and true looks of the brand.
The outlandish style and bizarre accessories (holding heads and baby dragons) of Gucci are what makes them Gucci. Michele has brought out all the stops for the shows and they just keep getting better and weirder.
Not only has the brand become one of the top-selling brands of the year, but it has also put a spotlight on high fashion. In recent years, we’ve seen luxurious brands like Versace whisper the words "bankrupt." But now the numbers are better than ever. The market for high luxurious products is demanding as ever, so much that Michael Kors bought out Versace to reach more people in international areas. Versace is expecting an $8 billion increase by 2020 with the help of Kors.
People like Michele bring staple pieces to a brand. These are pieces that everyone has to have in his or her closet. The Gucci belt, slides, mules, and tennis shoes are accessories we at least see once a day. When designs like that hit the runway people take notice and want to own those products for generations to come.
This season is no different, presenting the collection in a nightclub-turned-theater in Paris, with inspirations from all decades and pieces to really make an impression. “To try to make order out of disorder, bridge high culture and low culture, demonstrate the beauty in difference and the harmony that can come from culture clash, and so on,” said the New York Times. This show was anything but boring and definitely not the last of Michele.
We hope to continue seeing the love and passion that goes into these shows and clothing as time goes on. What will Gucci do next?
