How to Turn Your Small White Box into a Large Cozy Cottage

Most college students fantasize about their perfect college room months before the big move in. You need curtains, rugs, an assortment of blankets, and matching décor to complete your vision. As you scan your card or turn the key, you’re hit with a complete whitewash of 15 by 15 walls and carpet. Your room is a box; small and average. As students start to unpack, they are in desperate need to make their area feel as spacious as possible.

Step One: Keep Colors light then add accent colors

Yes, more white and cream colors do work to brighten and open your room. Having a solid, tufted white comforter set, can help tie in your favorite colors. Do you like pink, gold or even orange? Throw in accent pillows or little trinkets to show off your personality and color scheme.

Step Two: Add Texture

Add a fluffy rug! Or anything fluffy for that matter. Partner this with a sparkly or sequin pillow that coordinates with the color scheme. Don’t stop at the regular sleeping pillows too, add more to make your space feel homier and inviting for sleepovers and conversation. Throw blankets are essential as well. Find a nice warm color to partner with your accessories.

Step Three: Expand the room with mirrors

Mirrors give off the illusion of more space. Buy a big mirror to stand on your floor- do not get a skinny closet mirror. Make sure the mirror is nice quality, for selfies and OOTD posts on Instagram. Use it as a focal point and always make sure it is angled against the wall. They also reflect natural light that bounces off the walls to make your box feel larger!

Step Four: Create a feature wall

Now, this step might be my favorite. Adding a colorful wallpaper on ONE wall brings more dimension and style (as long as its removable). A large painting or big letters to hang over your bed is always a must to add a personal touch. Many people also like an element of light. If you have Christmas lights you want to use, make sure they are hung vertically, if long. If you line your light horizontally around the room, this makes your room feel closed in and boxy.

Step Five: Embrace simplicity

Too much of anything can make your room feel cluttered and less spacious. Keep your desk and shelves clear at all times. Adding little pieces of accessories go a long way. You can use metal or wood accessories to top your shelves. It creates a minimalistic look to your room. Enjoy a clean and airy space! Open the blinds to let natural light in. Lastly, if you want a touch of green, add an artificial plant or small flower to the shelves to give a fresh feeling.

I hope my tips will help you succeed in finding the perfect relaxing space you deserve!
