How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

As the school year begins it can be difficult to store all of your belongings. Whether you're in a dorm or off campus, it can be an issue for all of us. The idea of living a minimalist lifestyle is gaining traction, and now it is time for us to apply that to our closets. Less is so much more, and this is how to build your own capsule collection closet. The idea behind this is to remove all the clothes that you don't wear and then build a mini wardrobe filled with versatile pieces.

The golden number for this type of closet is to have 37 pieces. Each season you clear your closet of unwanted items and purchase a few more. The benefits of this are that you save money since you really only go shopping once a season. You also love every item in your closet, so you always wear something you like. It creates more time and money saved from the items you love. These are the five steps to start off your capsule closet!

1. Reduce the closet to only 35-40 items

2. Wear only those things for the season

3. Don't go shopping until right before the new season

4. Plan and shop for next season's capsule

5. Remove old season's items

Here are some tips to help you follow the five steps. First, your pieces should include tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and shoes. Do not include items like workout clothes, jewelry, accessories, purses, swimsuits, pajamas/loungewear, or underwear. In order to battle procrastination put all of your clothes, shoes, and accessories on your bed. This way, you're forced to get it all done before bedtime. Finally, when you are going through your clothes, create four separate piles for (1) the clothes you love (2) the maybes (3) the ones you should donate and (4) for clothes that are too far gone and need to be trashed.

Starting this process of minimizing your closet can seem overwhelming, and you may find getting rid of your clothes difficult. Just remember to not obsess over having 37 pieces, because it is important to find what works for you!
