How do UK Students Spend Their Thanksgiving Break?
As the holiday season and our long awaited winter breaks approaches, most UK students are preparing to leave campus.
Campus empties slowly at this time of year as students begin to travel away from campus to spend their Thanksgiving week. How, exactly, do UK students spend their Thanksgiving break?
Freshman Cameron King lives on campus in the Lewis Honors Dorms. While the dorm is closed for Thanksgiving, she will travel back to her hometown of Grand Rivers, KY to celebrate the holiday, like many students who travel within Kentucky to spend this holiday with their family.
Sophomore Katie Cochran lives off campus in Newtown Crossing apartment. Katie has plans to travel back to her hometown of Manhattan Beach, CA. While back home, Katie plans to see her friends from home and to travel to Los Angeles to eat at her favorite Mexican restaurant. She gets to celebrate twice by spending Thanksgiving with her family at home, as well as at her boyfriend’s house with his family.
Sophomore Lyndsay Lyon lives on campus in her sorority house. She has plans to travel to her hometown of Chicago, IL to see her family. She plans on spending Thanksgiving with her family at her Aunt’s house. Lyndsay will spend the majority of her break with her family.
University of Kentucky has a high population of students that come to school from Chicago. Many students will make this 6-hour drive to the Windy City for their Thanksgiving.
Sophomore Alyssa Rosenzweig lives off campus in the 525 Angliana apartments, and plans to travel to Spain with her family. Alyssa will travel to various parts of Spain and plans to do a lot do sightseeing.
Junior Kate Story lives off campus at Newtown Crossing apartments, and has plans to travel to College Station, TX to be with her family. While in Texas, Kate plans on attending the LSU vs. Texas A&M football game, and going to watch the new Fantastic Beast movie, “The Crimes of Grindelwald,” with her dad.
Freshman Ella Bailey lives on campus in the Donovan Honors dorm, and has plans to travel to her hometown of Paducah, KY for the break. While home, Ella plans on seeing her friends who attend different universities, and going to her favorite coffee shop, Etc., with those friends. She plans on spending Thanksgiving lunch with her Mother, then traveling to Calvert City to have dinner with her Father.
As you can see, students use this short break to their full advantage by doing everything from seeing family and traveling the world.
The University of Kentucky reported having 20,000 in state students and over 10,000 out of state students for the 2018-2019 school year. Of these 30,000 students, about a third of them live in on-campus University provided housing and will all have to leave campus.
