Money Saving Hacks for Apartments
Every college student knows that the next four years are all about being on a broke college student budget. Yet, the number one concern is how to not stretch your money too thin when getting everything prepared for your apartment. When it comes to saving money, all college students should tune in and here are some money-saving tips that I am here to share with you.
First, if you are short on space and money, renting or borrowing can come in super handy! Most college apartments already come fully furnished. However, that doesn’t mean that you wouldn’t want to add anything extra to make it more your style. Marshalls, Gordmans, and antique furniture shops are fairly cheap about their furniture here in Lexington, but you could ask your parents or friends if they have any furniture or trinkets that they are no longer using and wouldn’t mind you having.
The next money-saving hack you could look into is watching your utility use. For most apartments around campus, utilities are not included and it’s up to you to pay for those overages. You don’t even realize your usage until you’re hit with an additional monthly charge! A way to reduce these costs is to keep in mind of the lights that you always have on. Switch to energy efficient light bulbs (they last a lot longer), draw shades in the summer to block the heat and open the shades on sunny winter days. Also, incorporate fans to reduce you’re A/C usage.
Another money-saving hack is eating in. The amount of money people can spend on eating out could be well into the hundreds. You now have a kitchen to utilize. As expensive as grocery shopping can be, you’ll be saving money in the long run with the meals you’re preparing at home. One thing you could do is cook in bulk to have for the days ahead.
Now, one thing that student’s fail to realize is that renter’s insurance could go a long way with money saving. You never know when disaster could strike. Whether it’s a fire or a flood, you’ll be happy that you insured your belongings.
Another thing student’s overlook is multitaskers. Especially, when it comes to kitchen appliances. If you had to buy your furniture, look into a table with drawers for additional space or a bed with shelving at the bottom. When you’re in need of a blender, get one that not only blends but can mix sauces, smoothies, etc. Also, always go for high-quality pots and pans! Thank me later.
Lastly, this one could be hard but consider ditching cable. No, seriously! With sites like Amazon, Netflix and Hulu you’re already watching the shows that are coming on TV. By having cable, you’re paying for channels you don’t even watch. Roku TV’s come with all the works (as long as Wi-Fi is provided). Take it into consideration!
