Chic Costumes for Halloween 2K16

Halloween is just around the corner, so if you haven’t decided on your costume yet, now’s the time. Instead of just being one more Harley Quinn lookalike, celebrate Halloween as an icon of fashion. Here are just a few ideas:

Individual Costumes – Perhaps the most popular fashion costume of 2016 will be Beyoncé, specifically in a flowy yellow dress and with a baseball bat circa Lemonade. Other individual costume ideas include:

  • Rihanna

  • Lady Gaga

  • David Bowie

  • Frida Kahlo

  • Daisy Buchanan from The Great Gatsby

  • Vivian Ward from Pretty Woman (before her makeover)

  • Elle Woods

  • Cruella De Vil

Group Costumes – Now for the real fun. Group costumes can be hard to coordinate and perfect, especially for large groups, but they’re often the best (and most Instagram-worthy).

  • Anna Wintour and her squad – The ultimate fashion costume, this group effort can be no less than fabulous. Depending on how many people are in your own squad, you could include Anna, Grace Coddington, Andre Leon Talley, Karl Lagerfeld, etc.

  • Icons – Whether you’re more Grace Kelly or Marilyn Monroe, icons of the 50s and 60s will never go out of style. The best part about iconic costumes is that you can go as an individual or as a group of varying size. Possible icons include Elizabeth Taylor (spoiler alert: my costume this year), Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, and Marilyn Monroe.

  • Sex and the City – With four people, you can easily turn into Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha and Miranda. However, people might argue over who has to be Miranda because well, she’s Miranda.

  • The Spice Girls – For a group of five, the Spice Girls is the perfect way to combine 90s cool with costume chic. This time, though, everyone will want to be Posh Spice, so conflict might be a problem.

  • The Kardashian Family – Despite vast differences in income, your group can be Kim, Kourtney, Khloe, Kris and maybe even Kylie and Kendall for a night. You might not be wearing Balmain, but maybe Forever 21 has some cheaper alternatives.

  • Clueless – This costume could be for an individual (Cher), a duo (Cher and Dionne) or a trio (Cher, Dionne and Tai). It might be a little obvious, but come on, Cher’s yellow plaid skirt and jacket are iconic.

  • Scream Queens – Perhaps a modern (and darker) version of Clueless are the Chanels of Scream Queens. This costume is all about fur and pastel, but don’t let it go to your head.

  • Victoria’s Secret Angels – This one might be a little cold if you’re club or party hopping, but it’ll definitely be a show stopper!

Couples Costumes – Whether you’re going out with your best friend or dressing up with your boyfriend, couples costumes are all the rage. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Kimye – For a BFF costume, go for Kim and North.

  • Gigi and Kendall

  • Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen

  • Sandy and Danny from Grease (an oldie but a goodie)

  • Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

  • Thelma and Louise

Whichever costume you choose, commit to it. A costume is only as good as you make (and wear) it, so don’t wait until the last minute to buy supplies. Think about the weather, too. It might be raining, snowing or absolutely perfect, but you should still have a backup plan if you have to go outside. Lastly, have fun with it! Take pictures of your costume before you go out so you’re not too distracted by your phone, and enjoy the rest of your holiday celebrations!

We can't forget one of the biggest fashion icons: Barbie! To get the look, check out the following makeup tutorial:
