The Allure of Local

“Local” is having a moment in Kentucky fashion.

In a matter of years, local-inspired clothing has become an entire industry in Kentucky. There’s a new store, a new saying, and a new must-have Kentucky t-shirt each season. We’re not talking about the generic UK shirts, but instead the vintage-looking letter tees that appeal to even the stingiest of hipsters. And it’s not just t-shirts that are enjoying their newfound popularity – there are accessories, hats, jewelry and everything you could possibly need for a Caturday.

These local businesses have capitalized on the rise of casualwear among celebrities and It-girls everywhere. With logo tees on the rise, why shouldn’t local tees take part in the action? This trend has given us a whole new (and chic) purpose for the common t-shirt, and you know these pieces when you see them. Whether it’s a t-shirt or a necklace, they’re all totally Instagrammable.

Perhaps that’s the allure of the local trend: people like to show where they come from, what makes them special. By embracing southern, small town culture, these businesses combine the different aspects of Kentucky that make it what it is. There are references to everything Kentucky – bourbon, basketball, famous rivalries – everything from George Clooney to the lyric that made Drake the coolest UK fan ever: “I rock Kentucky blue.”

Other aspects include regional references like area codes and town names, as well as classics like My Old Kentucky Home and the Power K. So don’t be afraid to show your KY pride, even outside of UK games. As Kentucky culture continues to richen and expand, there will be local businesses ready to richen and expand our closets.
