Memphis Style
Memphis is a very interesting style. It started in the 80s and gained a lot of popularity due to the bold and bright colors and fun patterns.
The colors that are associated with this style include basically every color on the spectrum. However, the most popular colors are the primary colors and bold, vibrant ones. The patterns seem very busy but when you look closely its quite simple and organized. It's a very clean and modern look .
Oddly enough, the name originated in Italy when two architects/designers put on some Bob Dylan and brainstormed the name. The style came about because people wanted to move away from the 70s style that included more neutral and washed out patterns.
Memphis style covers both fashion and furniture. Many of you may even know this style but had never heard of the name! This style is very popular in the spring and summer time due to the fun bursts of color and an almost tropical feel with some of the patterns. Lots of stores such as Forever 21, H&M, ZARA, Topshop, etc. carry lots of clothing and accessories that fit this trend. Before American Apparel began to close down, their main look embodied the Memphis style. The video above is one of their ads from 2014 that is the perfect representation of the Memphis style in all its glory.
To achieve this style, my best advice is to go out and buy some bold statement pieces and try to mix and match them to see what you come up with! The best thing about this trend is that it's very easy to take inspiration from and it's timeless. So this summer, go out and try to incorporate a little Memphis style in your outfits!
