What is Eco-Friendly Makeup and Why is it Important?

The concept of ecofriendly and cruelty free makeup is thrown around a lot but what is it exactly and what brands are actually ecofriendly and cruelty free?

Eco friendly makeup is makeup that is packaged in organic or recycled type packaging and the makeup itself is as less harmful as it can possibly be. This means that a lot of the makeup products that have really extravagant and unnecessary packaging tend to be bad for the environment. This is because more resources are used to create it, more pollution is caused due to its production, and after the product is used up and thrown away, it helps fill up yet another landfill.

Cruelty free is a simpler concept which means that the product was not tested on animals. Many people thing that only certain types of makeup are tested on animals, but in reality almost anything you can imagine being applied to yourself, can be tested on an animal. This even goes for makeup applicators such as brushes and skincare products like lotions. This is problematic and inhumane for the animals being subjected to this treatment. Cruelty free makeup will advertise that it is ethical typically on the packaging and usually a quick internet search on your phone can give you an answer if the product you want to purchase is in fact not tested on animals.

But what brands meet these standards of being cruelty free and ecofriendly? Something important to note is a lot of makeup is mostly likely to be cruelty free but not ecofriendly because that is the easiest way of producing a product.

Some ecofriendly and cruelty free makeup brands are Tarte Cosmetics, NYX, Kiss My Face, EcoTools, Vapour, LUSH, and so many more.

Lastly an important misconception to note is that many people believe that this type of makeup is more expensive than ‘regular’ makeup. However many of the cruelty free and ecofriendly makeup is brought by well known brands and their prices do not differ drastically as much as people think. If any of the makeup is more expensive its because the quality itself is better for your skin and is less likely to cause a rash or breakouts. You are not being charged more for it being better for the natural environment, but for it being better for yourself.

The easiest solution to the issue of makeup brands being unethical is for us the consumers to be aware of the issue at hand and choose what we purchase wisely!
